Types of Structural Sealant

Epoxy
Epoxy is available in any hardware store. This two-component sealant requires mixing a resin and a hardening agent. Once the epoxy has set and cured, it forms a strong, medium-hard bond that resists vibration. Epoxy is favored for its high thermal and chemical resistance.

Acrylate
Acrylate structural adhesives also require mixing two compounds, including a curing agent, for faster drying times. Acrylic adhesives are strong and versatile and are used to bond PVC materials, nylon, glass, cement, ceramics, wood, and other materials.

Silicone
Silicone sealants provide a strong bond and resist chemicals, moisture, and weathering. They also perform well in high temperatures and are oil- and UV-resistant. Many silicone sealants are used in manufacturing to bind plastics, metal, and glass. For example, windows are often sealed using silicone adhesive, and it’s used to make aquariums and plastic tanks.

Polyurethane
Polyurethane sealants are made from organic polymers, which can be adjusted for strength, hardness, adhesion, and other properties. Polyurethane sealants are used for sealing and bonding and can be applied to auto glass, metal structures, HVAC systems, and more.

MS Polymer
MS polymer sealants are a hybrid of silicone and polyurethane. They are easy to use, require little or no surface preparation, are environmentally friendly, and deliver a strong bond for general applications.

Installation Guidelines

Surface Prep: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or contaminants. Some materials may need a primer designed for structural silicone for optimal adhesion. Always follow the manufacturer's surface prep and primer recommendations.

Joint Design: The width, depth, and overall design of the joint are critical for proper load distribution and performance. Designs vary based on the application and silicone type. Consulting manufacturer guidelines or a qualified professional is key for appropriate joint design.

Weather: Most structural silicones have optimal temperature ranges for application. Avoid installing in extreme cold (below 40°F or 4°C), heat (above 100°F or 38°C), or rain to ensure proper curing. Improper curing can weaken the sealant and Weather Silicone resistance.

Tooling and Finish: Use suitable tools like caulking guns and smoothers to apply and shape the neat, aesthetically pleasing sealant finish. Tooling ensures complete sealant contact with surfaces for a robust, watertight seal. Many manufacturers offer specific tooling tips.

Q: What is the thickness of structural sealant?

A: Structural sealant thickness must not be less than 1/4 inch (6mm). Structural bite must not be less than sealant thickness. Always round up when using the above equation. For instance, a 4-foot x 8-foot lite under 40 pounds per square foot windload requires 0.3333 in.

Q: What is the difference between weather sealant and structural sealant?

A: Structural sealant are used for structural and non-structural assembly bonding of various curtain walls. Weather sealant are mainly used for waterproofing and sealing the joints. The modulus, hardness, strength and price of structural sealant are higher than those of the same grade.
